Decoding Raw METARs

METAR (Meteorological Aerodrome Report) is the international standard format for reporting current weather conditions at airports. It typically includes wind, visibility, clouds, temperature, dew point, and pressure.

Reading the Code

Example: '27010KT' means wind from 270 degrees at 10 knots. '10SM' means 10 statute miles visibility. 'OVC020' means overcast sky at 2,000 feet AGL.

Flight Category

VFR conditions require a minimum ceiling of 1,000 feet and visibility of 3 statute miles (in controlled airspace). Lower conditions may require IFR.
