Decoding Raw METARs

METAR is the international standard format for reporting current weather conditions. It includes wind, visibility, clouds, temperature, dew point, and pressure.

Reading the Code

Example: '27010KT' means wind from 270 degrees at 10 knots. '10SM' means 10 statute miles visibility. 'OVC020' means overcast sky at 2,000 feet AGL.

Flight Category

VFR conditions require a minimum ceiling of 1,000 feet and visibility of 3 statute miles (in controlled airspace). Lower conditions may require IFR.
